This portrait is a bust painting of a gray haired man in mid 19th century daytime attire of black jacket and black tie. He is looking directly at the viewer and his left hand is resting on a tan book entitled Story Equity, Vol. I . To his left is a Grecian pillar, partially obscured by drapery which is also on his right. On the back of the canvas is Painted by W. S. Shackelford, 1857.. This portrait has a companion portrait 76.188 of the subject's wife. In 1980, this painting was considered to be in excellent condition.

James O. Shackelford (1809 - 1880) was born in Nashville, TN and educated at Transylvania University in Lexington, KY. After ben licensed to practice law, he opened an office in Dover, Tn, Stewart County. In 1836, he married Sabrina Metcalf and they were the parents of 12 children. In 1865, he was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of TN and Chancellor of the 7th Chancery division. |
