History of Work: This portrait was commissioned by its present owner, Ben T. May, who is the subject’s great-grandson. It is derived from a photograph that may date from the 1920s or 1930s. Jacob May was the owner and manager of the longtime May-family industrial enterprise, the May Hosiery Mill in Nashville TN. Operation of the Mill was continued by his son, Dan May, and then by Dan’s son, Joseph L. (“Jack”) May until its departure from the family’s ownership.
Notes: The portrait’s commissioner and present owner, Ben T. May, is one of four children of Joseph L. and the late Natalie May. He was born and grew up in Nashville TN. The artist was born and raised in Tennessee. In addition to being a portraitist, he is a retired art professor.
