Description:Bust-length of man in dark jacket with white shirt and black tie. He has a strong jaw line and his dark smooth hair falls to his jawline. He is turned three-quarters to reveal a right profile. The overall image is dark in color.
History:Work was done from a daguerreotype photograph and painted by the subject's granddaughter.
Notes:Sitter was born 2/2/1808 and died 6/2/1860. He took the name of his county (Bertie in NC) and married Judith Bell Estes in 1840. He is the owner's great-grandfather. The portrait normally resides at their Brownsville farm.
