Description:Infant in Christening dress with dog--note his sister, Fanny Noailles Murfree, is painted in the same Christening dress.
History of Work:Portrait painted in Murfressboro, North Carolina. It has come down through the Murfree family.
Notes:Subject was born on October 2, 1781 in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. He was the son of Col. Hardy Murfree and Sally Brickell Murfree. He married Elizabeth Maney of Hartford County, North Carolina. He was a United States Congressman from North Carolina from 1813 to 1817. He died in Franklin, Tennessee in 1836 at his home on the Murfree Branch of the Harpeth River.
