Description:Three-quarters right profile of a middle-aged man wearing a white shirt and tie and a black coat. His silvery hair is parted on his right and his sideburns come to just below his ear. The background is a red drape and a green table on his left has an inkwell with two quills, one volume of Pope (#5) and two volumes of "Overton Reports."
History:Originally loaned to Travellers Rest by Ida Thompson Dickinson, wife of Judge Overton's great grandson Henry Dickinson, in 1956. The portrait was donated to Travellers Rest in 1991 by Katherine Paty and Margaret Curry, granddaughters of Ida Thompson Dickinson. Restored by Charles Olin in 1968.
Notes:The portrait of Overton, 1766-1833, shows the Law Reports published in 1817 which helps to date the painting. Overton was in his early 50s. In 1820 he married for the first time "the widow May", Mary McConnell White, widow of Dr.James Frances May.
