Description:Older grey-haired lady sitting in a red upholstered armchair and wearing a long-sleeved grey dress with a v-neck softened by pleats. She is facing three-quarter right, but her head is turned so that she looks directly at the viewer. Her arms are resting on the chair arms, and only her left hand, wearing a band on the ring finger, is visible. She is wearing a strand of pearls, and the pin on her left bodice may have contained a watch.
History of Work:Portrait has come down through the Stokes and Murfree families. The artist is the subject's sister.
Notes:Subject was born on March 13, 1862 and died on November 28, 1948. She lived with her parents at their home, Tulip Grove, in Hermitage, Tennessee until her marriage to Walter Stokes, Sr. After their marriage they lived in Breezemont on the Stokes Family Farm on Hillsboro Road, Nashville, Tennessee.
