Description:Seated, knee-length frontal of a woman with dark eyes and hair in a black dress with a white lace collar holding a child aged 2 or 3 on her left. The child is dressed in a white gown and is barefoot. The overallcast of the work is dark in color except for the child and the mother's face.

Notes:The surface has some abrasions, chips, cracking, and some missing pigment.

Sitter was married to Mr. Ward who founded Ward-Belment School.
