  • Description:Subject is an older woman seated in a red upholstered chair, wearing a dark, long-sleeved dress and a white bonnet tied with a satin bow under her chin. Her arms are resting on the chair, and her hands fall loosely at the end of the chair arms. Her dark hair is parted in the middle and drawn back under the bonnet, and she is looking directly at the viewer.
  • History:The portrait was passed down from generation to generation on the owner's mother's side of the family. Her maiden name was Mary Varina Gaither who was born at Stanton Hall in Natchez, Mississippi. Owner's mother's family moved to Nashville in 1915. Portrait has been restored by Cumberland Art Conservation (1988).
  • Notes:Subject was born July 10, 1790, and died December 24, 1879. She married James Jackson and they lived at the "Forks of Cypress" in Florence, Alabama and owned the race horse "Glencoe." She is the current owner's great, great, great grandmother.
