Notes:Born Oct. 17, 1819 in Adair County, KY; Moved to Nashville in 1849; Johnson, while Military Governor, appointed him Head of Tennessee Hospital for the Insane in 1862. He was a Baptist Whig, President of City Council in 1862; State Senate 1873. Pioneered free public schools in Nashville. Championed Roger Williams School for Negroes (where Peabody is). Postmaster 1877-89. President of Tennessee Baptist Convention (only layman to so serve).
