Description:Bust-length portrait of a young woman with long, very curly brown hair falling over her right shoulder. Her head is turned three-quarter left and her blue eyes are gazing somewhere in the distance. Her bodice and shoulders are covered with a filmy pink shawl, caught at her left shoulder with a pink rose. The background is mottled shades of blue-gray.
History:This portrait is of Margaret Watt Dearie, the 4 great aunt of the current owner. She was born in Scotland in 1804 and died at Grand Gulf, Mississippi in 1837 and is buried there. She emigrated to the US in December 1836 and lived with her brother, John Watt of the Briars in Natchez, who loved her and commissioned the portrait, so it probably dates to Dec. 1836 - July 1837, the dates she lived in America.
