Description:Portrait shows Ann Muirhead Sharpe dressed in typical mid-1840's dress. The color of the dress is black and the portrait is on a black background. She wears a pin to clasp her white lace and ruffled scarf, and one square-set, with attached drop-pendant, earring is showing. Both pin and earring are of a floral design, possibly mosaic, with colors of pink, white, grey, green and coral on black background and in a gold rimmed setting, Her smooth, dark brown hair is parted in the middle and draped gracefully above her ears and away from her face. Her eyes appear greyish-green or hazel.
History:The canvas itself has some cracking and several small spots on the background and lower dress areas where the paint has peeled away. For its age, however, it is in good condition. This portrait was handed down from Benjamin Sharpe's widow, Ann Muirhead Sharpe Schott to their daughter, Mary Charlotte Sharpe Goodwin (Mrs. Allen Brooks Goodwin) to their daughter, Mary Charlotte Goodwin Young, (Mrs. Frederick Bradford Young), to their daughter, Dorothy Lee Young (Mrs. Howard Moore) to their daughter, Mary Charlotte Moore (Mrs. Joseph Price) to her brother, Hal Arch Moore, Sr., who is the present owner.
Notes:Ann Muirhead Sharpe (Schott) is buried next to her first husband, Benjamin Sharpe, their three-year-old daughter, Victoria Sharpe, and one-year-old son, Charles Sharpe, in Nashville City Cemetery. She was survived by three little girls, Emily Ann, Mary Charlotte, and Margaret Louisa. Her death in March 1852, at age thirty-three, followed Benjamin's by only a few years. Following Benjamin's death in 1848, she was briefly married to Mr. Frederick Schott. All of her children were by Benjamin Sharpe.
