  • History:Gift of Louise Claiborne-Armstrong. By tradition this portrait was damaged when the sitter's daughter, the donor's grandmother, sewed the painting under her riding skirt and rode to safety during the Battle of Nashville. All portraits remaining in the family's home were vandalized by Union soldiers who slashed canvases and made special efforts to puncture areas around the eyes in all portraits.
