  • History:Given to the Carter House in 1992 by Mr. and Mrs. Jim Britt.
  • Notes:Mr. and Mrs. Britt thought this to be a portrait of Samuel Atkinson Carter, born June 24, 1833 and died June 10, 1837 from a broken neck caused by a fall through a second floor bannister at the Carter House. Others have disputed this identification and think that he is Charles McAlister Nichols, b. 1835, d. 1837. Samuel Atkinson Carter was the older brother of Mary Alice Carter who married Daniel McPhail and was Mr. Britt's great-grandmother. The child was named for his grandfather, Samuel Atkinson, son of Rev. John Atkinson, Revolutionary Soldier.
