Description:Knee-length seated three-quarter left miniature of young woman with dark hair parted in the middle and worn up. She is wearing a blousy, low-cut dress with a shawl and holds a fan in her left hand. Her hands are in her lap. An elaborate background interior includes a red drape. The frame is dark wood and very elaborate. Signed and dated on the backing paper: "Painted by Geo. H. Hite/Nashville/1836."
History:Purchased from Caldwell Galleries in upstate NY around 1975. Hite is listed as a resident of a hotel on the Nashville City Square for 1832-1834 in a newspaper advertisement. Exhibited in Tennessee State Museum's 1988 "Portrait Painting in Tennessee."
