Notes:The subject's father emigrated from Scotland and fought with the British in the Revolutionary War. After the war he moved South to Alabama. James Wemyss, the son, worked as a cotton broker in Mobile. During the Civil War he was captain of an equestrian Confederate regiment and was wounded. His first wife, Fannie Hatch #85, and children died of diptheria. Later he married her sister, Annie Hatch #83, who was ten years younger. The couple had eleven children. After the War, the carpetbaggers in Alabama became so objectionable to Wemyss that he moved his family to the Gallatin area of Tennessee. Their home was named Maple Shade.
