  • Description:Seated waist-length portrait of subject wearing a dark dress with long sleeves and lace showing below the sleeves and above her hands resting in her lap, right over left. A white lacy bodice with collar and a brooch at the neck is visible under the dark outer garment. Her dark hair is parted in the middle and swoops to the back, covering her visible ear; she is smiling and looking directly at the viewer.
  • History:Portrait has come down through the Wendel-Miller-Haynes families and is now in a private home.
  • Notes:Sarah Jane Keeble was born on November 7, 1814 and died March 26, 1873. She was the daughter of Walter Keeble and Sarah Hudson of Murfressboro. Subject married David Deaderick Wendel on December 20, 1837. They had seven children: Walter K. Wendel, born 1839, served in the Confederate Army as a Lieutenant in Company A., 2nd Regiment, Tennessee Volunteers, killed, Battle of Richmond, Kentucky, August 20, 1862; David Wendel born June 20, 1842, died October 11, 1844; William Wendel born September 5, 1844, died May 13, 1910; John Watson Wendel, died May 12, 1868 aged 21 years; Sally Hudson Wendel, died February 21, 1875, aged 26; Susan Amanda Wendel born January 5, 1851, died September 22, 1852; Hattie Wendel born 1852, died March 12, 1885. Susan Amanda, Hattie, and David died very young and John and Sally never married. They are buried in the family plot in Evergreen Cemetery, Murfreesboro.
