History:This portrait was commissioned by the Vanderbilt Board of Trust. The original was destroyed in the 1905 fire which gutted University Hall. The portrait was reproduced by the artist, Louise Lewis, grand daughter of Garland, in 1907 - 08 and now hangs in Kirkland Hall.
Notes:Landon C. Garland, who had previously served as Chancellor of Randolph-Macon in Virginia, as well as the University of Alabama until it was destroyed during the Civil War, was professor of physics at the University of Mississippe when asked by Bishop Holland Mctyeire to become the first Chancellor of Vanderbilt University. He serrved in that position, as well as professor of physics and astronomy from 1873 (founding date) 1875 (opening date) until 1893. He continued as a professor until his death in 1895. Garland Hall, built in 1928, is named in his memory.
