History:This portrait of President Garrison was presented to Peabody College on May 9, 1946 by Horace Greeley Hill, Jr. in behalf of his family. The portrait now hangs in the Wyatt Center for Education on the Peabody campus of Vanderbilt University.
Notes:Originally from North Carolina, Sidney Garrison received his undergraduate degree from Wake Forest and then served as a high school principal and county superintendent. He entered Peabody College for Teachers in 1914, the first year of its existance on the new 21st Avenue Campus in Nashville. After receiving his master's degree in 1916, he joined Peabody's faculty. Following service in World War I, he received his Ph.D. degree from Peabody and served as professor of psychology from 1919 to 1934. From 1934 to 1938 he served as dean of the Graduate School, and from 1938 until his death in 1945 he served as president.
