History:This portrait of John Berrien Lindsley painted from life by Hankins, Cornelius now hangs in the Wyatt Center for Education on the Peabody Campus of Vanderbilt University.
Notes:Born in Princeton, NJ, John Berrien Lindsley was a son of Phillip Lindsley, who moved to Nashville in 1824 to become the president of Cumberland College. John Berrien was educated at the University of Nashville (formerly Cumberland College) and received the M.D. degree from the Medical School of Pennsylvania. He also studied thelogy and became an ordained Presbyterian pastorand reportedly attended Andrew Jackson at his death. Continuing to follow in his father's footsteps, John Berrien Lindsley became the president of the University of Nashville in 1850 and helped establish its Medical Department becoming its first dean. In 1853 construction began on a new stone building (the "castle" remains today on 2nd Ave.) which was to serve as the literary department of the University of Nashville. John Lindsley continued as president until 1870.
