History:There is no apparent artist signature or date on the painting. The painting is an upper torso view of the subject. He is dressed in the uniform of a 3-star Confederate General. The portrait was purchased by Mrs. Ann Orr in New Orleans and given to the State of TN in 1946.
Notes:Patrick R. Cleburne was born in Cork County, Ireland. He attended Trinit College before he enlisted in the British Army. He served for three years and then immigated to the United State settling in Helena, Arkansas. He practiced as a lawyer until the outbreak of the Civil War. He was one of the five generals who were killed at the Battle of Franklin and he was called the "Stonewall of the West." He was buried at St. Johns Churchyard near Columbia, TN, but his body was removed years later and reburied with much ceremony at his former home in Helena, Arkansas.
