History:This portrait was presented to the State in ceremonies January 16, 1933. It was unveiled by the Governor's granddaughter, Adeline Wilhoite Horton and accepted by Mrs. John Trotwood Moore, the State Librarian.
Notes:Henry Hollis Horton (1866-1934), born in Alabama, was the son of a Baptist minister. After graduation from Winchester College in 1888, he taught school for six years, and was admitted to the bar in 1894. He served in the state house and later in the senate, where he was elected speaker. It was from this office that he became Governor when Austin Peay died in 1927. Successfully elected in his own right in 1929, his involvement with the Lea-Caldwell banks in the depression years cost him his credibility and he came close to being found guilty of fraud. He abolished the state land tax and created an aeronautics division in state government, and developed a secondary road system. Horton did not seek re-election and he died in 1934.
