History:This portrait is an upper torso view of the subject who is wearing a black suit coat, vest and cravat, and a white high-collar shirt. The subject is seated with his body turned to the left and his head is directed to his right. The subject has a receding hairline. The portrait was given to the TN Historical Society by Sarah Childress Polk, the President's widow.
Notes:James Knox Polk (1795-1849) was born in North Carolina, but moved to Maury County, TN in 1806. He was the oldest of ten children. He attended local schools which included Bradley Academy in Murfreesboro, TN. He served one term as President of the U.S. (1845-1849) and is considered to be the first "dark horse" candidate for President. He also served as TN Governor (1839-1841), served seven terms in Congress, the last four terms as Speaker of House (1825-1839). He married Sarah Childress and returned to Nashville after his Presidency where he died of Cholera in 1849. He is buried along with Sarah on the grounds of the Tn State Capital.
