Notes:James G. M. Ramsey was born near Knoxville, TN and educated at Washington College and the University of Pennsylvania. Although a practicing physician, he was also a banker and prominently associated with railroad development. He is best known, however, for his Annals of Tennessee to the End of the 18th Century, which was the first history of the state written from a detailed examination of public and private papers. Dr. Ramsey was chosen President of the TN Historical Society in 1874. He died in 1884.
