History:Portrait was done when subject was representing the Washington District of North Carolina (now TN).The painting was acquired as a gift from the Sevier family in 1891. Conservation was done on the portrait in 1971 by Joseph Amarotico, Conservator, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia.
Notes:John Sevier (1745-1815) served in the Revolutionary War, commanding troops at the Battle of King's Mountain. He fought many battles against the Native Americans during the early settlement of Tennessee. He was elected the first Governor of Tennessee, serving in that position from 1796-1801 and again from 1803-1809 for a total of six terms.
