  • History:Portrait is of a white male in a dark coat,white shirt with a very high white collar. He has long light colored or gray hair.
  • Notes:Hugh Lawson White (1773-1840) was the son of James White, the founder of Knoxville, TN. He was born in Iredell County, NC and his family moved to East Tn in 1781. At age 20, he served as Secretary to William Blount, the Territorial Governor. He served as Judge of the Supreme Court of TN 1801-1807. From 1807 to 1809, he served in the Tn Senate, from 1809 to 1815, Judge of the Superior Court of Errors and Appeals, and from 1812 until 1827, he was President of the Bank of Tennessee, He ran for President against Martin Van Buren. Although he lost, he did carry TN's electorial vote. He died in Knoxville and is buried in the old Presbyterian Cemetery in downtown Knoxville.
