  • Description:Portrait of a seated woman facing three-quarter right and wearing a dark brown dress with white cuffs and collar showing. She has a brightly colored plaid scarf draped over her right shoulder and across her back, and her hands rest left over right in her lap. She has dark hair, pulled back and parted in the middle and is wearing a brooch and matching earrings.
  • History:The portrait probably hung at Glen Leven in Nashville. It was later moved to a niece's house and passed down through several Thompson family generations. Portrait is currently located out of state.
  • Notes: Mary Maxwell 1829-1914 was the sister of Harriet Maxwell, Mrs. John Overton Jr. She was the daughter of Jesse Maxwell Jr. & Martha Ravenscroft Claiborne. She was a "maiden lady" who moved to Travellers Rest after her father's death in 1856 and helped raise the Overton children.
