  • Description: Portrait of James Pegram Ward (1837-1894), husband of Martha Vesta Payne (1842-1924) and father of the artist, Nina Belle Ward (1885-1944). Dressed in his Confederate States of America uniform the subject is seated, holding a sword, his arm resting on a side table upon which sits his hat.
  • History:James Pegram Ward is the son of Benjamin Ward (1802-1848) and grandson of Seth Ward V of "Sheffield Plantation" on the James River three miles south of Richnmond, the family homestead since 1662. The portrait was painted from a photograph of the subject.
