History:Inherited from owner's father, Samuel Perkins Bailey, who inherited painting from his mother, the subject of the painting. Recently restored (after serious damage incurred during move) by Gianfranco Pocobene, conservator of the Isabel Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. This painting has a companion, "Uncle Willie," of a boy who must be a relative but who is without a known history.
Notes:Jane Ella Perkins was the daughter of Samuel Fearn Perkins of "Westview" in Williamson County. She married William Bailey, a physician in Nashville, and he (William) was the son of James Edmund Bailey of Clarksville, who was the Colonel of the Tennessee 49th, an attorney, and a senator from Tennessee. So, while this portrait and its companion are located outside of Tennessee, they both have a real Tennessee pedigree.
