  • Notes:Born in Rutherford County in 1845, Gideon Hicks Baskette was educated in Murfreesboro schools. He left college at the age of 16 to enlist in the Confederate Army and served with the 45th Tennessee Infantry from 1861 to 1865. He married Anna Eliza McFadden in 1867. Baskette began his journalistic career in 1874, when he became editor of the Murfreesboro News. In 1882, he was chosen to be editor of the Nashville American. He edited several other newspapers before becoming managing editor of the Nashville Banner in 1885 and president of the Nashville Banner Publishing Company. From 1911 to 1913, Baskette edited the Nashville Democrat. From 1913 to 1927, he served as Nashville's Carnegie Librarian. He died in Nashville in 1927 and was interred at Murfreesboro.
