History:This portrait is a copy of the R. E. W. Earle portrait of Napoleon, also in the collection of the State Museum, no. 3.592, and Earle copied his portrait from Girard, in Paris, 1815. The painting is in good condition as of 1998. It was presented to THS in 1858 by Capt. Thomas Claiborne.
Notes:Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was one of the greatest military leaders in history. Rising through the ranks of an Italian army, he eventually became Emporer of France. He reformed the French government and was made "Consul for life." He crowned himself Emporer, but ended up exiled to a small island.
