  • Description:The sitter's pose is three-quarter position with her gaze directed at the viewer (or artist). She is wearing a cream colored satin dress with a neckline finished with a deep lace bertha. Her right arm is bent, with that hand extending to her left wrist where she touches a wide gold bracelet. The left side of the painting shows a deep red drapery with folds falling from top to bottom of the canvas.
  • History:The painting hung until 1960 in the home of the sitter's niece, Rebekah Ward DeWitt, at 1812 15th Ave. S., Nashville, TN. Then it hung in the home of Elizabeth and Ward DeWitt until about 1982. It has been in owner's possession since then.
  • Notes:Florence Isabelle Hudson Brown was born November 12, 1850 in Dickson City, Tennessee, the daughter of Araminta Claiborne Napier and Dr. John Rolfe Hudson. She married Robert Weakley Brown on July 13, 1869. They had one daughter Jennie Hill Brown. The sitter died in Nashville, Tennessee on September 25, 1872 at the age of 21 years.
