Description:Nearly full-length portrait of a young woman seated in an upholstered, wood-trimmed armchair and wearing a gray full-length dress with matching jacket. The three-quarter sleeves of the jacket are edged in thick lace, and the subject's dark hair is parted on the right. She is gazing toward her left, and her body position follows that line left slightly.
History:While Eleanor Wiley was not as prolific as her sister, Catherine Wiley, both were gifted artists. They each painted many commissioned oil portraits during a culturally rich period in Knoxivlle from the late teens through the 1920s. This particular Eleanor Wiley portrait of Ethel Gaines is exquisite.
