Description: Bust length portrait of woman with body facing slightly right and head turned to look to the left (viewer's right). Her dark hair is parted in the middle and drawn back above her ears with cascading curls visible behind her right ear. She is wearing a dark, off-the-shoulder, black dress with white lace bordering the top of the bodice, and she has a bright red wrap draped over her left shoulder.
History:Mrs. Campbell was painted twice by Cooper, the first time was before her marriage and the second time was after her marriage. This portrait was painted after her marriage. This painting, which is a companion to the portrait of Brig. Gen. Alexander William Campbell (IAP record number: 81770063), was formerly attributed to an unknown artist. Notes:Born Sept. 13, 1833, the only daughter of Tillman Dixon Allen and Louisa (Gibbs) Allen of Smith County, Tennessee. Married Brig. Gen. Alexander William Campbell of Jackson, Tennessee in 1852. Her father died at the age of twenty-six, after which her mother married the father of Alexander William Campbell, John Wesley Campbell. They all lived in Jackson, Tennessee. She died on March 30, 1916.
