Notes:Born in Nashville, the son of John Wesley Campbell and Jane (Porter) Campbell of Jackson County, Tennessee. In 1852 he married Anne Dixon Allen, the daughter of Tillman Dixon Allen and Louisa (Gibbs) Allen. He was a lawyer, U.S. district attorney from 1854-1860, member of Constitutional Convention of 1870, and Brig. General in the Confederate Army. He died on June 13, 1893 in Jackson, Tennessee. This painting, which is a companion to the portrait of Mrs. Alexander William Campbell (IAP record number: 81770064), was formerly attributed to an unknown artist.
