Description:Oval shaped. Frontal, waist-up view of a middle aged woman in a black dress with a white bonnet that has a stick pin at the collar/neck. Dark brown hair, parted down the middle.
History:As the sitter is in black, it is assumed that she is dressed in mourning clothes for her husband, who died in 1845, hence the dating of the piece. Restored by Cynthia Kelsey Stow of Cumberland Art Conservation in 1993.
Notes:The sitter was the mother of Dr. William Archer Cheatham, the third husband of Adelicia Acklen. The sitter lived at Wessyngton, in/near Springfield, TN, in Robertson County. She was from southern Kentucky originally. The sitter was born on 05/21/1902 and died on 03/09/1864.
