  • History:There is no apparent signature on this portrait. The portrait is an upper torso view with the subject dressed in a Confederate General's uniform with his hand resting on a sabre.
  • Notes:Hampton J. Cheney (1836-1927) was educated at the Kentucky Military Institute at Louisville. He was appointed commanding officer in the 2nd TN Regiment, serving in VA. He also served as Adjutant to General John C. Brown. After the Civil War, he was Assistant Postmaster in Nashville (1888-1892), served in the State Senate (1892), was appointed Postmaster at Nashville by President Cleveland and served as City Comptroller for Nashville from 1898 until 1906.
