  • Notes:William Parish Chilton, a native of Athens, Tennessee, was Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, and he served in the U.S. Congress and in the Confederate Congress as a member from Talladega, Alabama. Chilton County, Alabama was named in his honor in 1874. He was married to the former Mary Morgan. It is thought that his portrait and that of Mrs. Chilton were "marriage portraits," painted within the year of their marriage, and before they later moved from Athens, Tennessee to Talladega, Alabama.
