History:The portrait was done in 1911 by Lorine Goodwin and is a copy of the first portrait done of Crockett by an unknown artist when Crockett was a state legislature in the 1820. The earlier portrait is still in existence.
Notes:David Crockett was born near Limestone, TN in 1782. He served as a scout under Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812. After the war, he moved first to Franklin County, then on to Lawrence County, where he was elected to the TN State legislature in 1821. Later he moved near Reelfoot Lake and also served in the State Legislature from that region. Later he served in the U.S. Congress (1822-31 and 1833-35). Crockett left Tennessee in 1835 to join the movement for the independence of Texas. He arrived at the Alamo in February 1836. He was killed there in the final Mexican assault on the garrison. His greatest claim to fame was as a soldier, hunter, frontiersman, humorist and writer.
