Description:Subject is seated facing three-quarter left with only her eyes turned to look at the viewer. She is wearing an elaborate ruffled bonnet patterned with dots that conceals her hair and is tied with a bow under her chin. Her dress is very dark and has a collar of the same color as the bonnet with white patterned trim around the bottom edges.
History:The portrait was cleaned in 2000 to remove grime and soot stains.
Notes:Sarah George married Edward Douglass in Fauquier County, Virginia in 1740. They removed from Virginia and settled in Sumner County, Tennessee, in 1785. The portrait was painted soon after their arrival in Sumner County.. The portrait descended in the Douglass family for many generations to the current owner.
