Description:Oval waist-length of a young woman with dark brown hair, parted in the middle and pulled back to cover all of her ears except her left ear lobe. She is wearing an off-the-shoulder dark red gown, trimmed in transparently painted lace at the low neckline and on the sleeves. The background is a soft olive green. "W. B. Cooper" is prominent on the right side of the work.
History:The portrait descended in family hands to the current owner. Cleaned ca. 1994 by Lilly Steele, apprenticed under Cynthia Stowe of Cumberland Art Conservation.
Notes:Sophia Louise Horton, daughter of Joseph White Horton & Sophia Western Davis Horton, was born in Nashville in 1828. She married Col. William Dixon Dunn in 1848. They lived in Mobile, Alabama, where Mrs. Dunn died in 1871.
