  • Description:Looking to the right, our subject is wearing a dark jacket over a high-collared blouse adorned with delicate lace. Her dark hair is placed neatly on top of her head.
  • History:This portrait was painted posthumously in 1911 by well known artist W.B. Newman. She was born at Maple Grove near Murfreesboro, TN, studied in Cincinnati, OH and Paris, France, returning to Nashville in 1902, and opened Newman School of Art in 1905.
  • Notes:Elizabeth Everts Bellsnyder Keith (1837-1925) was the daughter of Thomas Bellsnyder, a well-known steamboat captain. She married Samuel Jackson Keith in 1865. She was educated at the Nashville Academy and Nashville Ladies Collage and was known for her untiring work for local charities. She was a founding member and President of the Board of the Old Woman's Home for 34 years and was a resident at the time of her death. A portrait of her four children included in this project (#853) and is housed at Cheekwood.
