  • Description:A seated Henry Hill is dressed in academic regalia denoting the Ph.D. degree from Teachers College, Columbia. Right hand is holding his mortar board and his left is resting on the arm of a red leather chair. He is wearing a white shirt with a red tie.
  • History:This portrait hung in the Iris Room of the Hill Student Center until 2005 when it was moved to the Wyatt Center for Education known as the Social Religious Building before 2000.
  • Notes:Henry Harrington Hill, born in South Carolina, educated at Davidson College, the University of Virginia, and Teachers College, Columbia, served in the public school system in Arkansas, before joining the University of Kentucky faculty. He also served as superintendent of the St. Louis school system and the Pittsburgh school system before becoming president of Peabody College for Teachers in 1945. Here he served until his retirement in 1961 but returned to the post as acting president in 1966 - 67. Built in 1959 during Hill's administration, Peabody's student center, was named in his honor in 1967.
