Notes:Memucan Hunt Howard (1798-1886)was a philanthropist and an early pioneer surveyor of West Tennessee. He was born in Granville County, NC and died in Philadelphia, PA. He was the founder of the Howard Library in 1885 which was incorporated into the Carnegie Library in 1901. A plaque to him is displayed in the lobby of the Nashville Public Library. At the request of ex-Governor James D. Porter, Howard wrote of his early experiences in the wilderness and this was published in The American Historical Magazine Vol. 7, No. 1 (January 1902). The artitcle is entitled "Recollection of Memucan Hunt Howard."
