Description:Bust-length of man with combed back silver-white hair in three-quarter left profile. His black coat and white shirt have a high collar that nearly touches his ear. Under his black tie a cascading scallop of white ruffles protrudes from his coat. His eyes look straight ahead, that is to the left of the canvas. Oil sketch of man on right barely visible is perhaps Gen. Lafayette on the triumphal U. S. tour. The background is a muted and mottled warm brown.
History:Purchased from Christie's in the early 1980s to Dr. Tom & Roberta Parrish, who sold it to the current owners ca. 1983. Work presumed to have been painted when Jackson and Lafayette were in a boarding house in Washington, DC. The work was in the Lafayette family previous to the Christie's sale.
