History:The portrait, painted from life by Hankins, Cornelius in 1905, now hangs in The Faye and Joe Wyatt Center for Education on the Peabody Campus of Vanderbilt University.
Notes:Born in Paris, TN and educated at the University of Nashville, James Davis Porter was appointed a trustee of the Peabody Education Fund in 1867. He served for two terms as Governor of Tennessee (1874 - 1878). While Governor, he arranged for the use of the University of Nashville campus by the State Normal College funded by the Peabody Educational Fund. Porter served as Chancellor of the University of Nashville and President of George Peabody College for Teachers from 1901 - 1909.
