  • Notes:John Claunch, who grew up in Louisiana, received his bachelor's degree from Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College in Texas. After teaching in public schools for several years, he received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Texas and went on to teach at Southern Methodist University where he became the chair of the Department of Government and the dean of Dallas College, an adult education facility established by SMU. It was from there that he moved to Nashville in 1967 to become the president of Peabody College for Teachers where he remained until 1974.
