Notes:About the subject: Dan May (1898–1982) was a Nashville, Tennessee business, educational and civic leader. He became chairman of the May Hosiery Mills in Nashville after the death of his father, Jacob May (1861-1946), who founded the company. Dan May was an active member and trustee of many civic and educational organizations in the Nashville area. These roles include the following: An alumnus and long-time member of the board of trustees of Vanderbilt University. A member of the War Production Board During World War II. A longtime member of the Nashville Board of Education and its chairman for three years. A magistrate of Davidson County TN. Chairman of the school committee of the Davidson County Court which governs the working of the county school system. A long-time member of the Board of Trust of Fisk University. A member of the Nashville Rotary Club and at one time its president, the first time a Jew had been elected to this office. An advocate for the consolidation of Nashville City and Davidson County governments and subsequently a member of the resultant united governing body, the Metropolitan Council. In Nashville’s Jewish community he was president of the Jewish Community Center and of the Community Council, and served as general chairman of the Welfare Fund on two occasions.
