  • Description:Waist-length seated three-quarter right profile of a woman wearing a long-sleeve black dress that covers all of her torso, arms, and neck. Her right hand is visible in the center foreground. Sitting in a red, round-back chair, she is wearing a white bonnet with a black ribbon.
  • History:The work was given to the owner by Sheffield Clark, a descendant of John McAlister.. Sandor Bodo repaired smoke damage.
  • Notes:Frances was the daughter of John and Frances (Alexander) Aiken of Delaware. After the deaths of her first husband, Dr. David Thompson, and her parents, she moved to Jonesborough, Tennessee, where her brothers had settled. On December 25, 1800, she married John McAlister II.
