History:This painting was restored in 1916 and as a result was significantly damaged. The work was overpainted and most of the finishing layers were obliterated. It cannot be further restored.
Notes:Catherine Hobson McNairy was the daughter of an aide to General George Washington, and the wife of Nathanial McNairy. The portrait was painted at the time of the Marquis de Lafayette's visit to Nashville. She wore this dress at the ball given for the Marquis at the Nashville Inn.
