History:P26. Entry # 72 in book "Portraits in Tennessee Before 1866."
Notes:Nee Catherine Waller. "Almost certainly, this portrait was painted by Oliver Frazer (1808-1864), at a time of appx 1845. His treatment of women's faces in other - known Frazer - works is strikingly similar to this. . .Frazer's work is typically quite flattering of his female sitters, probably a commercial hint he acquired from his time with Thomas Sully. But more importantly, after the early death of his closest friend and mentor Matthew Harris Jouett in 1827, Frazer - more than anyone else - filled the void left by Jouett and travelled in his same circles. The fact that Jouett painted portraits of BOTH of Mrs Carson's parents (William Smith Waller & Catherine Breckinridge Waller) pretty much cements the attribution."
